How to choose a dental clinic in Istanbul —
eight criteria, before we tell you about GC.

This page is, first and foremost, not an advertisement. As a UK patient considering treatment in Istanbul, what objective questions should you ask before choosing a clinic? We work through eight of them. At the end of each, we have written GC Clinic's own answer. Make the comparison yourself; ask the same eight questions of any other clinic on your shortlist.

Set the frame first

There are two distinct clinic models in Turkey.

If you are travelling to Istanbul from the UK for dental treatment, you should know that two very different clinic models operate in Turkey. Both are legal and active; the outcomes they deliver are not the same.

The factory clinic model

  • 15–30 patients per day
  • Rotation — a different dentist at every visit
  • Agency commissions plus heavy marketing budget
  • Aggressive price campaigns
  • Wax-up mock-ups frequently skipped
  • Full crowns preferred (rather than veneers)
  • Aftercare: vague or none

The academic boutique model

  • 1–2 cases per day
  • One dentist — the same person every visit
  • Direct patient relationship, no agency in between
  • Transparent, tiered pricing
  • Wax-up mock-up on every aesthetic case
  • Conservative first: veneers, inlays, bonding before crowns
  • Written aftercare protocol + partner-dentist network

GC Clinic sits in the second model — but your job is not to take that on trust. It is to evaluate us objectively. The eight criteria below are written for that purpose: ask before you choose. Walk away from any clinic whose answers are not crisp.

Objective Clinic Selection Matrix

Eight questions you should ask first.

01

Is there a dentist you can name?

Ask: "Who will be carrying out my treatment? Will the same person be my point of contact from the first video call to the final review?" The clinic name is not enough — you should be dealing with a named clinician. Their CV, training, specialty and society memberships (ESE, AAE, BDA, GDC, etc.) must be independently verifiable.

GC: Dr. Cansu Öztürk — endodontist with specialist training. Ege University DDS 2010, specialist training in endodontics at Marmara University 2012–2016 (under Prof. Dr. Semih Özbayrak), Head of the Department of Endodontics at Yeni Yüzyıl University 2016–2019, ESE & AAE member. She runs every case personally. Full biography →

02

How many cases do they take per day?

Ask: "How many patients do you see in a day?" If the answer is 10+, there is speed pressure — and the wax-up mock-up is likely to be skipped. For aesthetic cases this is critical. How long is each appointment? 30 minutes is the bottom of the quality range; 90+ minutes signals discipline.

GC: 1–2 cases a day. Every aesthetic appointment is a 2–3 hour block. 200–300 patients a year. No volume pressure, plenty of chair time. Two dentists, four treatment rooms — but our patient count is what it is; the model has not changed since 1985.

03

Is the material brand stated in writing?

Ask: "Which implant brand, which model? Will the lot number be provided in writing?" "Premium implant" is not a sufficient answer. Whether it is Straumann BLT, Nobel Active, Medentika or Osstem — the difference matters for the manufacturer's warranty and its cross-border validity.

GC: We use Straumann (Switzerland), Neodent (Straumann Group) and Nobel Biocare (Sweden/USA) only. No generic or copy brands. For every case, the lot number, manufacturer passport and Authentic Check verification are provided in writing in your file. Materials & lot certification →

04

Is the written warranty period and scope clear?

Ask: "How many years is the implant warranty? Crowns and veneers? What are the conditions? Is it valid outside Turkey?" A "lifetime warranty" claim is a red flag — it isn't realistic and carries no legal substance. Warranties should have defined durations, be stated in writing, and have explicit conditions.

GC: 10 years on implant fixtures (Straumann/Nobel manufacturer + clinic), 5 years on crowns and veneers, 2 years on endodontic re-treatment, 1 year on soft-tissue grafts. Conditions: annual check + hygiene + no trauma. Signed in English, in your name. Warranty document →

05

Is there an overseas follow-up protocol?

Ask: "Once I'm back in London or Manchester, how does my aftercare work?" If the answer is "you can WhatsApp us", that is not enough. Is there a partner-dentist network? A systematic aftercare programme? Is the documentation pack (lot numbers, CBCT, NHS-compatible report) prepared for your local dentist?

GC: Two-layer aftercare — Layer 1 live today (clinic warranty, NHS-compatible records, WhatsApp follow-up at 2 weeks/3/6/12 months, return-flight clause for covered complications). Layer 2 in development — partner-dentist network being qualified across London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow first. Aftercare protocol →

06

Is there a written contract clause for complications?

Ask: "If a complication arises after treatment, what happens? Who pays? If I have to fly back to Turkey, who covers the flight and accommodation?" Without a clear written clause, everything depends on the clinician's verbal commitment. Insist on a written one.

GC: "We bring you back" contract clause — for covered complications inside the warranty period, return flight + corrective treatment + 4★ partner hotel + airport transfer are at our cost. 14-day notification required. Full clause signed in English, in your treatment agreement.

07

Is the documentation compatible with UK records?

Ask: "Will the treatment plan and invoice be issued in English, with codes my UK dentist and dental insurer will recognise? Will I get an itemised invoice I can submit to Denplan, Bupa Dental or my employer scheme?" If not, reimbursement and continuity of care become harder than they need to be.

GC: NHS-compatible records pack as standard — surgical report, lot certificates for every material, CBCT in DICOM, occlusal plan, itemised English-language invoice referenced to NHS Bands and BDA equivalents where applicable. Records pack detail →

08

What is the clinic's institutional history?

Ask: "How long has the clinic been at this address? Who founded it? Is there an academic lineage?" Newly opened clinics aren't inherently problematic, but they sit in a different risk class — clinics with a documented continuity can show they will still be there in five to ten years. For a UK patient, an address that you can still find a decade later has real value.

GC: Same address since 1985 (Şakayık Sokak 39/1, Nişantaşı). Founder Prof. Dr. Semih Özbayrak — PhD (Oral Medicine) Freie Universität Berlin, Head of Oral Diagnosis at Marmara University 1986–2013. Forum & voice-of-customer

What our UK and EU patients actually say.

"Not the cheapest clinic. Forum research, four weeks of correspondence beforehand, written plan — all there. The work passed my UK dentist's review."

— Mumsnet · UK · 2024

"The lot-numbered records pack made things much easier with my dentist back in Manchester. He was sceptical at first; once he'd seen the documentation he took over the routine follow-ups."

— Trustpilot · UK · 2024

"After the BBC Panorama documentary I had real Turkey-teeth anxiety — but this clinic isn't the factory model. One or two cases a day, a single dentist, conservative approach."

— Reddit r/AskUK · 2024

"Two dentists in London told me 'nothing more we can do for this case'. In Istanbul, a CBCT-led re-evaluation produced a Nobel All-on-4 plan. The answer changed."
